Altadena Crossfit & Jiu-Jitsu Gym

Adaptive Fitness for Neurodiverse Youth & Young Adults

Safe, structured strength and conditioning for athletes ages 10–25 with autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Our Adaptive Functional Fitness program at CrossFit Altadena is built for athletes who think, move, and learn differently. We provide a calm, supportive environment where neurodiverse youth and young adults can build strength, coordination, confidence, and real-world physical skills through tailored functional fitness.

Who we serve

Our Adaptive Functional Fitness program is designed for athletes ages 10–25 who benefit from extra structure, clear coaching, and scaled movement. We commonly work with:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • ADHD
  • Down Syndrome
  • Intellectual and developmental disabilities
  • Sensory and motor coordination challenges

We meet each athlete exactly where they are. Sessions are custom-scaled to the individual — no prior fitness experience required.

What Training Looks Like

We use functional fitness to build strong, capable, confident athletes. Every session follows a predictable structure so athletes know what to expect:

Arrival & Check-In – Simple, calm transition into the gym.
Warm-Up & Movement Prep – Gentle movement, joint prep, basic patterns.
Skill or Strength Focus – Squats, carries, presses, pulling movements, balance work, and coordination drills, all scaled to the athlete.
Conditioning Piece – Short, doable bouts of bike, row, light carries, or simple circuits to build stamina.
Cool-Down & Reset – Breathing, stretching, and a short debrief to end on a win.

We use clear visual and verbal cues, repeatable routines, and positive reinforcement so athletes feel successful and safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Does my athlete need prior gym or sports experience?
A: Not at all. Many of our adaptive athletes are brand new to structured fitness. We start at their current ability level and progress gradually.

Q2: Can I stay and watch during sessions?
A: Yes. Especially at the beginning, many parents or caregivers stay on-site to help with transitions and comfort. Over time, some athletes prefer more independence — we’ll follow your lead.

Q3: What if my athlete has sensory sensitivities?
A: We understand that noise, crowds, and new environments can be challenging. We schedule adaptive sessions during quieter gym times whenever possible and adjust lighting, sound, and movement choices to support each athlete.

Q4: What ages do you work with?
A: Our Adaptive Functional Fitness program is currently built for ages 10–25.

Q5: Is this therapy or medical treatment?
A: No. This is an adaptive fitness program, not medical or behavioral therapy. We focus on movement, strength, conditioning, and confidence in a gym environment and are happy to coordinate with your existing therapy team if helpful.

We offer both 1-on-1 and small group adaptive training options. Pricing depends on session type and frequency.

We are actively building partnerships and exploring funding options to make adaptive fitness as accessible as possible for families.
